Each
year the Women's Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA)
and the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) recognize
the outstanding registered American Quarter Horse in
barrel racing. The owner of the AQHA/WPRA "Horse
of the Year" receive $5,000 and an AQHA bronze
trophy. The second place receives $3,000 and the third
$2,000. Horses are nominated and then the top 25 in
the NFR standings vote for the top horse.
This year's AQHA/WPRA Barrel Horse
of the Year is Rare Fred "Fred", owned by
Ronald Martin and ridden by Mary Burger. This is the
second such award for Fred, who also captured the title
in 2006, the same year he carried Burger to her first
world title. In 2009, the duo won $58,000 at the prestigious
RodeoHouston in March.
Finishing second and third in the
voting was Judge Buy Cash (Jethro) and Sugar Moon Express
(Martha), respectively. Jethro is owned by Frank and
Lynne Mays and ridden by Brenda Mays, while Martha is
owned and ridden by Lindsay Sears. Jethro finished third
in last year's voting, while Martha won the award carrying
Sears to a record breaking year and her first world
title.
A more in-depth article on the AQHA/WPRA
Horse of the Year will appear in the December issue
of the Women's Pro Rodeo News.
