NFRTanner Pulls Double Duty in Mesquite

Jill Tanner pulled double duty at the Mesquite Championship Rodeo on Saturday, June 20 winning the breakaway roping and finishing fourth in the barrel racing.

Tanner of Stephenville, Texas, stopped the clock in the breakaway roping in a time of 3.0 seconds to squeak past WPRA World Champion Lari Dee Guy who is coming off a big win in Woodward, Oklahoma. Guy finished with a 3.1. In the barrel racing, Tanner stopped the clock in 15.47 seconds in an event that was won by Shelby McCamey in a time of 15.27 seconds. Shelley Morgan was second with a 15.40 and in her first trip to Mesquite, two-time and reigning world champion Hailey Kinsel finished third in 15.43 seconds. Kinsel was riding another palomino she calls Jules that is owned by Hodges Farms and was trained by Janna Brown.

Tanner won $927 for the roping win and $693 for her barrel racing finish. Tanner has been around the sport of rodeo all her life, the only daughter of 1981 all-around world champion Jimmie Cooper and his wife, Shryl. Her twin brothers, Jim Ross and Jake, have qualified for the National Finals Rodeo in team roping. Her husband is Jimmy Tanner, a two-time NFR qualifier in the team roping.

The only other rodeo on the WPRA schedule over the weekend was in Grover, Colorado. World Champion Mary Walker raced away with the title in a time of 17.75 seconds, just ahead of fellow NFR qualifier and circuit champion Kelly Yates in a time of 17.76 seconds. Walker pocketed $789, while Yates took home $684.
