In Their Own Words

1.  Tell us about the horse(s) you’ll be riding at the National Finals Rodeo.  MP Quick Money
“Money”  an 8-year old grey gelding by PC Frenchmans Hayday out of Quckern A Wink; Easy Dash Oak “Roundpen” a 16-year-old bay gelding by Victory Dash out of Easy

2.  What steps are you taking to prepare?  I try to find some buildings that are small and that the horses have to run up against the walls.

3. What are you most looking forward to when you get to Las Vegas?  The competition and the chance to run at $17,000 every night.

4. What is your strategy for keeping you and your horse calm while waiting in the alley?  I guess I don’t really have one.  There is a fine line between focusing too much and not focusing enough.  I know that I did all the work to get here and now this is the bonus.

5. How does it feel to be going to the WNFR again?  It’s fabulous to be back on my good sound horse!

6. Who will make up your support team while in Las Vegas?  My husband, Jessica Wahlert, and Sydney

7.  Will you be taking your vet and/or shoer with you?  My vet is coming but is not staying the whole time.  No shoer.  There is an accuscope lady who comes and works on my horses.

8.  What has been your biggest challenge in 2011?  Staying gone from home long periods of time is harder now that Sydney is a little bigger.  She wants to be home with her dad.

9.  What has been your biggest lesson this year?  Not to give up and not to quit.  It was a dog fight to the end.  I think there were more people at the bottom and no one gave up.  It took more money this year than it’s ever taken.

10.  Explain what you think barrel racers who achieve high levels of success do differently than others?  I think they approach barrel racing different.  They are prepared and confident but they are not cocky.  A lot of times, people have the talent and the horse but they don’t have the confidence.  When you go down the road and get all the runs under them, you gain the confidence that you can win no matter where you are or the circumstance.

11.  Who has been your biggest mentor in life and why?  Probably my parents.  My parents push me to be better all the time.  They help me see what I am doing and how I can be better.

12.  What are you most grateful for that has helped make your barrel racing career possible?  Roundpen.  A great horse teach you things that a medium horse can’t.  I’ve been blessed to get to ride a GREAT horse.

13.  Given that you have to be packing and getting ready for the NFR during Thanksgiving and then spending 10 – 14 days in Vegas do you ever get to enjoy the holidays? Yes I do because I have a 2 year old and a 12 year old.  My Christmas shopping starts about the 20th of December.
I usually turn my horses out until the day after Christmas so I take a break and try to be normal for a little bit.

14.  Who are your sponsors?  Ariat, Western Hauler, Pro, Impact Gel, Circle Y, Back on Track, OxyGen, Equi-fitness, Nutrina, Shorty’s Caboy Hattery, and Luann’s Leathers. Ariat, Western Hauler, Pro, Impact Gel, Circle Y, Back on Track, OxyGen, Equi-fitness, Nutrina, Shorty’s Caboy Hattery, and Luann’s Leathers.
