Cervi Sets New Arena Record at 2010 Wrangler NFR
By Ted Harbin

12/10/10
The fastest barrel racing run ever at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in the Thomas & Mack Center happened Thursday night during the eighth go-round.

World standings leader Sherry Cervi rode speedy MP Meter My Hay around the cloverleaf pattern in 13.48 seconds, bettering the previous mark of 13.52 set in 2006 by Brandie Halls.

Plus, it was just another fabulous run by Cervi and Stingray, an 8-year-old palomino mare out of Miss Meter Jet by PC Frenchmans Hayday. It marked the sixth time the pair placed in the round and the third round victory for the world standings leader.

"I've been letting it all hang out every run," said Cervi of Marana, Ariz. "I treat every run the same."

So is Stingray.

"She just works really good," Cervi said. "She knows her job. It's nice to have a horse like that."

Stingray's job, apparently, is to set records. Cervi is on pace to surpass the average record set in 1986 by 11-time world champion Charmayne James, who finished with a cumulative time of 138.93 seconds.

Thursday's round also included a lead change in the average race. Cervi moved into the No. 1 spot with 110.68 seconds on eight runs, scooting past Jill Moody of Letcher, S.D., who sits No. 2 in 110.77. Lisa Lockhart of Oelrichs, S.D., is third, even after knocking over a barrel.

"I was at the top of the ground, and I knew I needed to take advantage of it," Cervi said. "When I was warming her up, I knew it was going to be really good or really bad."

And it sets things up quite nicely for Cervi to win her third gold buckle; she also won world titles in 1995 and 1999. If she places in Friday's ninth round, she should clinch the championship.

"This has been one of those years that you dream about," she said. "It could end tomorrow, so I'm going to enjoy it while I can."
