This
is going to be good to the last barrel.
Cassie Moseley, of Farwell,
Texas, won the ninth round of barrel racing at
the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo Friday night,
but all eyes remained on the race between world
champions Lindsay Sears and Brittany Pozzi.
The WNFR concludes Saturday
at the Thomas and Mack Center. The WPRA world
barrel racing title will be decided in the 10th
and final round.
Pozzi and Sears have been battling
through the first nine rounds and the 10th is
expected to be no different.
Moseley, aboard 10-year-old
Mitey Man, won the round in 13.74 seconds. It
was Moseley's second go-round victory. She also
won the fourth round.
"It was amazing,'' said
Moseley of her victory. "This is only my
second WNFR and to win two rounds
I'm on
cloud nine.''
The winning run came after Mitey
Man struggled through rounds seven and eight,
knocking over a barrel in each run. Moseley and
her prized horse had no such problems Friday night.
"He had a lot of fire in
him,'' Moseley said. "He's been kind of dead
the last couple of nights, so I was glad to see
him come back. Knowing him so well, like the back
of my hand, I could tell he had that adrenaline
pumping tonight. He really came out and surprised
me.''
After watching her horse lope
through two rounds, Moseley brought in Mitey Man's
stable mate Disco for some horse company.
"They like to pick on each
other,'' she said with a laugh. "They could
give each other a pep talk. Whatever they said
to each other, it worked!''
Moseley pushed her season earnings
to $109,109 and is eighth in the WPRA world standings.
Pozzi, of Victoria, Texas, was
second in 13.88 seconds for $13,545 while Tiffany
Fox, of Fox, Okla., followed in third with 14.00
for $10,228. It was Pozzi's sixth top-three finish.
Pozzi, the 2007 world champion,
continues to lead the world standings with $241,009.
Sears, the reigning world champion, is second
with $232,259. However, Sears leads the average
- worth almost $44,000 - while Pozzi is third
in the average.
Sears leads the average by a
tenuous one-tenth of a second over two-time world
champion Sherry Cervi, of Marana , Ariz., Sears
is 125.12 seconds over nine runs, while Cervi
is 125.22 seconds.
Sears tied for seventh place
in Friday's ninth round with a time of 14.12 seconds
aboard Martha.
It
ended her string of 16 consecutive go-rounds at
the WNFR of cashing a check, dating back to the
third round of 2008. The record is 22 straight
rounds of money won by Kristie Peterson (1995-97).
The four-time world champion came back to win
money in 17 consecutive rounds (1998-99).
