Sears Seals the Deal, Winning the Average en route to her Second World Title
By Ted Harbin

12/11/11All Lindsay Sears needed to do on Saturday night was to round the cloverleaf pattern clean inside the Thomas & Mack Center.

She posted a blazing 13.75-second run to finish second in the 10th go-round at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and is leaving Las Vegas with her second Montana Silversmiths gold buckle.

"I didn't think I needed to change my game plan at all," Sears said. "I don't have safetying-up in my vocabulary, and neither does Martha.

"I wouldn't have been satisfied any other way."

Sears finished with a cumulative time of 139.5 seconds through 10 nights in Las Vegas, earning her first NFR average title. In all, she won $133,558 at the NFR, $45,865 coming from the aggregate payout.

"That's huge," Sears said. "It's something I always wanted. It's the first time I've gotten around barrels all 10 rounds. I'm very excited to have finally gotten that."

Jane Melby won the 10th round with a 13.71, earning her third go-round title in her first qualification to ProRodeo's championship event. She is the only barrel racer in the 15-woman field to have won three rounds, and in her first venture to the Nevada desert, Melby won $59,712.

"That's a blessing itself to win that kind of money," she said. "Where else could you go to run for it, let alone win it."

In 10 nights that featured many overturned barrels, eight cowgirls posted clean runs on the final night of the 2011 season. The downed barrels might be a strong indication of just how tight the race has been for the ladies' share of the $6 million NFR purse.

Just four cowgirls had sub 14-second runs on Saturday night, but Melby led the way with her fastest run of the week on her terrific mount, RC Black In Black, by Ninety Nine Goldmine out of Rabbit Redux.

"She's been outstanding," Melby said of Beauty, a 7-year-old black mare. "I did the right thing by giving her those two nights off in round 5 and 6, and she came back strong. When you've got that much money on the line, you hate to run the second-string horse, but you also have to do what's best for everybody involved."
