It
was a rough night for most of the barrel racers in San
Antonio but seven-time Wrangler NFR qualifier Angie
Meadors made it look easy turning in the only sub-14
second run. The Blanchard, Okla., cowgirl stopped the
clock in 13.87 seconds to capture the barrel racing
title at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo and added
an additional $12,445 to her previous San Antonio earnings
pushing her six run total to an astounding $18,340 in
the Alamo City.
"It is so exciting," said Meadors moments
after taking the victory lap around the AT&T Center.
"The feeling is beyond words. This rodeo is so
amazing and such a fun experience."
Contestants competed in three-round brackets with the
top four in the five brackets advancing to a two-round
semifinals and from there the top five in each of the
two semifinals advanced to the final round on Feb. 25.
Then it was one run to determine the grand champion.
Meadors rode Heza Bug Leo that is owned by Trip duPerier
and his daughter, 2010 WPRA Junior Champion Callie duPerier
of Bandera, Texas.
"Bugs is just so amazing and gets better and better
on every run and he really likes this rodeo," Meadors
told Steve Kenyon of ProRodeoLive.com. "I had never
met his owners until tonight but they were able to come
and see him compete it was great. Plus my boyfriend
Kollin VonAhn won the team roping here tonight, so this
has been an exciting night."
Meadors got Bugs, a 7-year old sorrel gelding, in June
when she was in need of a new horse and after winning
$15,870 over the Fourth of July, it put her back in
contention for a NFR berth. She would go on to qualify
and competed on both Bugs and Mulberry in Las Vegas.
Meadors' closest competitor was Carlee Pierce with a
time of 14.03 and finished the San Antonio rodeo with
$14,738. Heading into the finals Brittany Pozzi and
Savanah Reeves were in the driver's seat in terms of
most money won. Pozzi was the last to go but after two
knocked down barrels she finished in a time of 24.03,
costing her the title. Reeves took third with a 14.11-second
run and added $12,608 to her 2012 earnings. In addition
to the nice paycheck, Meadors also received a $5,000
fuel card from the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo.
In addition to Pozzi, three other barrel racers out
of the field of 10 knocked over the cans while one broke
the pattern receiving a no time.
Full coverage of San Antonio will be available in the
April issue of the Women's Pro Rodeo News.

Melby Advances to Semifinals
in San Antonio
By Ann Bleiker
Jane
Melby made history in December by becoming the first WPRA
barrel racer from Minnesota to qualify for the Wrangler
National Finals Rodeo, and she would like nothing more
than to earn a return trip in 2012. A San Antonio title
would set the cowgirl from Backus on the fast track to
that goal. On Monday night, Feb. 20, she surpassed the
first obstacle moving on to the semifinals after collecting
the most money in the fifth and final bracket with a total
of $4,421.
The fifth and final bracket of competition came to a close
during the Monday evening performance, Feb. 20. The field
has been narrowed from 50 contestants in each event to
20 based on money won. Those 20 have been divided into
two groups of semifinalist who will compete over the next
four performances. Their money won thus far will be added
to anything they win in the two round semifinals. The
top five total money winners from the two semifinal brackets
will advance to the finals slated for Feb. 25.
Melby climbed higher and higher in the results as the
rounds went by. She finished third in the first round
in a time of 14.71 seconds. Robyn Herring, who has been
on a hot streak as of late, won the first round with a
13.99-second run. Melby would improve on her time and
placing in the second round finishing second behind Brenda
Mays. Melby stopped the clock in 13.92 seconds, while
Mays won the round with a blistering time of 13.77. As
the saying goes "the third time's the charm,"
held true for Melby who won the third round in a time
of 13.96 seconds to move to the top of the money board
and a shot at more money in the Alamo City.
Others advancing out of bracket V include Mays, Cassie
Moseley and Herring.

Montague Makes Most of her
Trip to San Antonio
Courtesy Susan Kanode,
for the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo
The
format of the $1.2 million San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo
allows for competitors to have a mistake and still qualify
for the semifinals, however, it's the most consistent
ones that are earning the most money.
That money could give them a distinct advantage as they
move into the next bracket as it is again money that advances
them to the final round and a chance to ride for a single
$12,445 paycheck. The fourth bracket was completed in
the AT&T Center Saturday night, Feb. 18, with several
contestants placing in all three rounds of competition
and now making plans to return for the semifinals.
The big winner in the barrel racing in bracket IV was
Robin Montague who lives in nearby Bandera. Riding her
horse Chief, Montague won the first and second rounds
and placed in the third to win $4,913. The former full-time
teacher made two happy victory laps around the arena in
front of friends, family and her current students. She
has taken her love for horses, learning and children and
uses that to teach riding lessons.
"I'm blessed beyond measure," she said. "This
is unreal. I just got the phone call on Sunday night (Feb.
12) inviting me to come here. I know I'm where God wants
me to be."
Montague finished two places out of qualifying for the
San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo in the Women's Professional
Rodeo Association. She got her invitation when another
barrel racer was unable to compete.
Two-time world champion Brittany Pozzi, from Victoria,
also earned a big chunk of change thus far. She won the
third round in a time of 13.70 seconds, and also placed
in the second to win $3,439.
Savanah Reeves, WPRA Texas Circuit Director and wife of
PRCA steer wrestler Matt Reeves, will also be making a
trip to the semifinals after placing in every round and
winning $2,948. Matt was the top money winner in bracket
IV in his event winning the second and third round and
placing in the first for a total of $4,913.
Kaley Bass, who finished second in the 2011 WPRA Rookie
of the Year race, rounds out the qualifiers from bracket
IV. To everyone's surprise two-time and reigning world
champion Lindsay Sears failed to collect a check in San
Antonio.
The fifth and final preliminary bracket of competition
will have their first and second rounds of competition
on Sunday, Feb. 19 at 1 and 7 p.m., and will conclude
on Monday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m.

Bessert Tops Money Board in
Bracket I of San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo
by
Ann Bleiker
After
finishing the last two seasons in the top 25 of the WPRA
world standings, Sammi Bessert is hoping 2012 will be
the year she cracks the top 15 and earns a first trip
to the Wrangler NFR. Bessert of Loma, Colo., is putting
herself in a position for a shot at the big money at the
San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo.
The first bracket of competition came to a close during
the Saturday matinee performance, Feb. 11. The top four
money winners in each event will advance to the semifinals
where their money will be added to anything they win in
the semifinals. The top five total money winners from
the two semifinal brackets will advance to the finals
slated for Feb. 25.
Bessert top the money board in bracket I with a total
of $3,930 to 2012 Fort Worth champion Nikki Steffes' $2,948.
Bessert got the ball rolling finishing in a three way
tie in the first round with Deb Renger, and Shelley Morgan
with times of 14.20 seconds.
Kelli Tolbert finished fourth with a 14.26 but turned
up the heat in the second round stopping the clock in
14.05 seconds. Bessert would finish in the money at fourth
with a time of 14.23. Since San Antonio winners are based
on total money instead of a time aggregate like most rodeos,
it is important to finish in the money every time out.
Bessert returned for the final round of bracket I to turn
in the fastest time with a 13.90 to outdistance Steffes,
who finished with a 14.21. When all the calculations had
been done the four ladies moving on to the semifinal round
were Bessert, Steffes, Morgan and Tolbert.
