Well Worth the Wait
by Ann Bleiker
6/4/12

A new welcome sign in Fountain, Colo., was unveiled on June 1 featuring longtime resident and 1964 World Champion Barrel Racer Ardith Bruce. While it might have taken 48 years for the event to happen it was well worth the wait.

"Thanks for bestowing this honor on me," said Bruce during the unveiling ceremony. "I thank all those that made this day possible after so many years. It had been discussed back in the 60's, but wasn't until now that the great folks of Fountain made it happen."

Fountain resident Fran Carrick brought the concept back to the table. The idea was to construct a "welcome sign" at the south entrance of town off I-25 to the City of Fountain that would both welcome visitors by highlighting the City's heritage, and honoring Bruce's accomplishment.

"What Ardith accomplished for the sport of rodeo and for women's athletics is truly outstanding. She is a great example to future generations as well as a shining example of our city's rich heritage," City Manager Scott Trainor told the El Paso County & Fountain Valley Advertiser and News.

Bruce, a native of Kansas moved to Fountain, Colo., in 1963 and the following year went on to win the Girls Rodeo Association world title aboard Shaws Kingwood Snip better known as Red. Since that time she has taught countless individuals about the sport by giving riding lessons, taking them to local competitions, and passing on her knowledge about horses and the sport.

Approximately 50 friends and family were in attendance for the unveiling including Ardith's son, Dan; Debbie Thompson, who lived with Ardith for four years and became like a daughter to her and former WPRA Board member Amber Bruce West, Ardith's granddaughter, and her family.

The WPRA Congratulates Ardith Bruce.
