Whyte is Golden in the Black Hills
by Jolee Lautaret
2/8/10

Rapid City, S.D.-The Wrangler Million Dollar Tour has officially begun with the closing of the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo in Rapid City this past weekend, the first stop amongst the Silver Tour Rodeos.

Eau Claire, Wisconsin cowgirl Tammy Whyte has dominated the Great Lakes circuit for several years aboard her tough gelding, Luckys Tiny Bit, better known as Cisco. The 2009 Great Lakes Circuit champion, who won an incredible 13 of 25 circuit rodeos last season, is venturing outside the confines of her circuit this season.

Before heading south to Texas, Whyte decided to try her luck in Rapid City as a warm up. It was a profitable decision. The four-time circuit champion and her 14-year old partner dominated the competition at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. Whyte and Cisco swept both rounds en route to the average title and $4,971 in winnings. The earnings put the cowgirl near the top 20 in the early NFR standings.

"I am still on cloud nine," Whyte laughs. "I was pleasantly surprised at how well it went."

Whyte took the competition by storm in the opening round, held during slack. She and Cisco rounded the tiny course in 12.46 seconds. The nearest competitor was Melissa Bachand, nearly three tenths back.

With an hour to rest, Whyte came back in the slack for her second go with even better results. Her 12.30 in round two was the fastest time clocked at the BHSS this year and held up through the five performances of the rodeo. Whyte finished with 24.76 seconds on two runs, a half second over second place, former NFR qualifier June Holeman and the amazing former WPRA/AQHA Horse of the Year Sparky Impression.

A complete recap will be available in the March edition of the Women's Pro Rodeo News.
